Within Jardin du Petite Sablon there are 48 statues that you will find including 10 of important 16th-century humanists & distinguished Belgians which are placed in a semi-circle arrangement around the Egmont & Hornes Fountain. These are all shown on a monument map that you can find at the southern entrance to the park and include:
1) Egmont and Hornes centre Fountain
2) William of Orange-Nassau (1533-1584)
3) Louis Van Bodeghem (1470-1540)
4) Henri de Brederode (1531-1568)
5) Corneille De Vriendt (1518-1573)
6) Rombaud Dodoens (1518-1585)
7) Gerard Mercator (1512-1594)
8) Jean de Locquenghien (1514-1574)
9) Bernard Van Orley (1495-1542)
10) Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598)
11) Philippe de Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde (1538-98)
Statue (9) is of important artist Bernard Van Orley who is credited with kicking off the Flemish Renaissance period which in no small part reshaped the art world in Northern Europe during his lifetime. This statue is the work of sculptor Julien Dillens and depicts Van Orley nicely dressed with tricorn hat. His right hand is missing so we can't tell what he once held. Several fingers are missing from his left hand as well.
Overall, it is a fair statue nicely fit amongst the nine other peer monuments around the centre fountain, worth a couple minutes to enjoy while you are monument viewing at Jardin du Petite Sablon.
