This monument stand in tribute to Rombaud Dodonee also known as Rembert Dodoens, a 16th century Flemish physician, botanist and court physician of the Holy Roman emperor Maximilian II.

The monument is a stone sculpture depicting Dodonee as a scientist wearing long cloak, tight trousers and a vest. In his right hand he is holding petals of flowers. In his right, a book and a flower.

The statue of Rombaud Dodonee can be found in Jardin de Petit Sablon amongst many other monuments to notableBelgians. The monument is not a must-see per se, but the collection of sculptures to notable Netherland and Belgian personalities, and the park makes it worthwhile though.

This is one of ten statues of illustrious 16th-century scientists, politicians or artists standing in ivy-clad niches at the back of the Egmont and Hornes Fountain in the exquisite Jardin du Petit Sablon.

Rembert Dodoens, also known as Rombaud Dodonée (in French) and Rembertus Dodonaeus (in Latin) was a Flemish physician and botanist (1516 or 1517 -1585). He became famous as the author of the ‘Cruydeboek’ (1554), an herbal grouping a large number of plants according to their medicinal properties. The book was translated into French and English. The statue, by Belgian sculptor Alphonse de Tombay (1843 – 1918), isn’t remarkable in itself, but the ensemble of the statues and the setting make it worth seeing. However, given the choice between Tombay’s work and the weird, gnome-like tribute by Ad Wouters in the Botanical Garden of Leuven, where Dodoens received a medical degree at the Catholic University, Dodoens would probably have chosen the former.

There are 48 statues found at the Jardin du Petite Sablon including 10 of important humanists & distinguished Belgians. They are placed in a semi-circle around (#1) the fountain monument to the Counts Egmont and Hornes and include the following (#2-11) from right to left as is shown on the garden map:

2) William of Orange-Nassau (1533-1584)
3) Louis Van Bodeghem (1470-1540)
4) Henri de Brederode (1531-1568)
5) Corneille De Vriendt (1518-1573)
6) Rombaud Dodoens (1518-1585)
7) Gerard Mercator (1512-1594)
8) Jean de Locquenghien (1514-1574)
9) Bernard Van Orley (1495-1542)
10) Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598)
11) Philippe de Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde (1538-98)

Statue (6) is of the notable Flemish physican and botanist Rombaud Dodoens, the last monument on the right side of the Egmont and Hornes fountain when you are facing the monuments. It was created by Belgian sculptor Alphonse De Tombay and depicts Dodoens nicely dressed with an overcoat draped over his shoulder while he holds his famed book of medicinal herbs called Cruydeboek in his left hand while he grasps a writing instrument in his right hand.

It is a decent statue when viewed alongside its contemporaries in the garden. Give it a couple minutes to enjoy while viewing the many many monuments found within Jardin du Petite Sablon.
