There are 48 statues found at the Jardin du Petite Sablon including those of ten important humanists and distinguished Belgians of the 16th-century that you can find described on the garden monument map at the southern entrance. They are placed in a semi-circle around (#1) the fountain monument to the Counts Egmont and Hornes and include the following (#2-11) from right to left as is shown on the garden map:
2) William of Orange-Nassau (1533-1584)
3) Louis Van Bodeghem (1470-1540)
4) Henri de Brederode (1531-1568)
5) Corneille De Vriendt (1518-1573)
6) Rombaud Dodoens (1518-1585)
7) Gerard Mercator (1512-1594)
8) Jean de Locquenghien (1514-1574)
9) Bernard Van Orley (1495-1542)
10) Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598)
11) Philippe de Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde (1538-98)
Statue (2) of William of Orange-Nassau is the first statue situated on the right side of the Egmont and Hornes fountain when facing the monuments. It is next to the (3) Louis Van Bodegham statue. This monument was created by Belgian sculptor Charles van der Stappen and depicts Prince William the Orange in his middle-aged years. He appears tiresome with his eyes fixed downward. The prince is nicely dressed with overcoat while his left hand resting on his sword handle.
It is a nice statue as are the other nine flanking the fountain. It is worth a brief look but you might need to research the historic figure beforehand or afterwards as there is no relative historic information found here at the garden, simply the statue with a small base with name engraving.
