About
The René Magritte Museum occupies the house in which the Belgian surrealist painter worked nearly 24 years of his life. Beside the apartment where the painter lived, a biographical exhibition is spread on the two upper floors. Since 2019, a new wing presents a selection of 200 works of Belgian abstract Art. Don't get this museum mixed up with the Magritte Museum (collection of paintings), which is a wing of the Fine Arts Museum (City center).

Rene Magritte House Museum is not the same as Rene Magritte Museum. The price was more affordable than the Museum closer to centre. This was a good trip if you're visiting the Atomium as you can see the Atomium from one of the floors of the house.
The museum is split into two. One half focuses on abstract art, and the other half focuses on surrealism. The people working in the museum are very welcome to help if necessary. The layout of the museum is very unique and enjoyable to walk around.

We were going to visit the new Magritte Museum when we were in Brussels this weekend, but were astonished to see the Disneyland scale queue in the ticketing area (which is shared by all the museums in the vicinity). Luckily, having asked an employee at a different desk, we found out that the Magritte Museum was already sold out for the day (this was at 12.30 pm). I have no idea if the museum employees did announcements to alert people in the queue that they might be queueing for nothing, but just wanted to warn others - it's worth asking if there are still tickets.

Wonderful house museum dedicated to the undisputed father of Belgian surrealism.

It needs careful examination given the intricacy of some of his works, which require a thorough analysis.

A must for fans of the genre. @gargio76

Please be aware that many of the reviews on this page are actually for the Magritte Museum (the large art exhibition) in the centre of Brussels, when this museum listing is, in fact, for Rene and Georgette Magritte's house in Jette (135 Rue Esseghem), a short bus ride just outside the centre, in Jette. You can see the Magrittes' original living room, kitchen, and the dining room where Magritte painted many of this masterpieces, as well as Studio Dongo at the bottom of their garden. On the first and second floors are showcases with letters, leaflets, photographs etc., and some reproductions of his paintings on the wall. This is for big fans of Magritte, who are interested in seeing where he lived, as well as more artefacts from his life.

...the great Magritte's - these appear to be in other institutions. Nevertheless, this is an informative tour of the artist's life and work (in French and Flemish only!), well-presented on three levels with some surprises. Enjoyable, if slightly disappointing...

If you are familiar with Magritte's art you will know what I mean when I say that his art is kinda wacky. The titles of the paintings seem to have nothing to do with the subject matter and his home movies represent him and his surrealist friends as real cut-ups. Some of the paintings shown are familiar to anyone who knows anything about 20th century art, but others are more obscure. While I don't fully understand his philosophy of art, most of the pieces presented are colorful and thoroughly enjoyable. We thought it was sweet that his main model was his wife and that they were together throughout their lives from the time they were quite young, while many of his contemporary artists took up with younger women, sometimes serially, until they were quite old. Worth a visit.

I was spending few days in Brussels and friends recommended that I visit the Magritte Museum. I was very confused and it actually took me a couple of days to find out that there is not one Magritte Museum in Brussels, but two!! One is the Museum Rene Magritte (http://www.magrittemuseum.be), is located in Jette and exhibits mainly biographical items of Magritte's life; the other is Musee Magritte and is located in the centre of Brussels and exhibits artworks of Magritte (http://www.musee-magritte-museum.be). I'm sure I'm not the only one to be confused and it would be really useful if there was a clear connection between the two museums since I think they complement each other very nicely, so for a Magritte-fan it would be good to see both.
Anyway, this review refers to Musee Magritte: it is a lovely collection of artworks by Magritte, they are arranged in chronological order and there is a lot of information regarding Magritte's biography (alas very few information in english!). The staff is friendly and it is possible (and advisable) to make an online reservation via the museum website. The rooms are very dark, but I find that this is not disturbing and it exalts the beauty of the artworks; sometimes the light was not ideal since it was giving reflections so one has to find the best angle to view the artworks. Most important is that I found the rooms to be really chilly cold: make sure you have warm clothes with you when you go!!! Apart from these details, a very nice museum to visit.

There seems to be some confusion in the reviews about this museum. The details of this indicate it is the old (but existing) museum, located in the Brussels area of Jette. However, some of the reviews refer to the new one in the city centre, at the musee des beaux arts, website is http://www.musee-magritte-museum.be/

The new one is a nice museum, giving a good oversight of the development of his paintings. It is probably worth taking the audio tour. We did not do that and missed background on the symbolism of the paintings. It gets quite busy in which event you are allocated a time slot to visit the museum. But you can always entertain yourself in the museum cafe behind where you buy the tickets, or nearby on Grand Place and around. Apparently tickets can also be booked online.

It took us more than an hour by train, tram and walk from central Brussels but we go there and it really was wonderful to see how Magritte and his wife lived in this house with many artefacts about his life and some of his more rare paintings. The so called abstract paintings were rather disappointing as the term abstract really should have been art deco and color field paintings.

A visit to this museum is a must if you are interested in Magritte or Belgian abstract painting. Magritte lived in the rental appartement on the ground floor of n° 135 for almost 25 years and maybe created half of his paintings there. When it initially opened, the museum covered all 4 floors of that building. Currently, the museum also includes the house next door (the entrance is through n° 137) - both houses have 4 floors.
